Name: Miiko Suzuhara || now known as Mimi
Canon and medium: Animal Academy: Hakobune Hakusho
Age: 1 (Preincarnated was around 50+ years)
Preincarnation Species: Bakeneko
Preincarnation Appearance: Cat and human forms!
Any differences: She is no longer blue. Instead, she’s your typical dark grey tabby.
Preincarnated History: Miiko was once an ordinary stray, taken in by a sickly man named Teruo Suzuhara. He often commented on how pretty she was, and did everything he could to spoil her – which was not much, considering he was but a poor author. As she lived with him, she began to learn human words, and would often try to tell him “I love you!” However, due to her inability to speak, it would come out only as the usual mews, which he often misinterpreted for a desire for more food.
Eventually, Teruo managed to write an amazing book, and even won an award for it. Miiko was especially happy because it made Teruo so pleased, and saw him often take out his award to look at it fondly. She received even nicer food during this time.
However… Teruo became even more sickly, and his sister (whom Miiko disliked intensely) would always come by to help out with the housework. She watched as Teruo quietly hid his beloved award in a purse. One day, she woke up to find that Teruo had dragged himself out of bed to watch the snowfall… Only to later die from his illness.
She didn’t understand why Teruo had stopped moving, and was later chased out by Teruo’s sister, taking the purse along with her. She became determined to learn human language so she could tell Teruo how much she loved him, and was later found by an old bakeneko woman who put her through intense training so that she, too, could become a bakeneko and learn the ways of humans.
Once her training was complete, her teacher directed her to Morimori academy, a school for magical animals to learn to become human. There, she promptly met another cat (or so she thought) named Neko Fukuta, who happened to have a very comforting scent. The two ended up in the same class, and were even put together as roommates.
During the course of her time at Morimori, a kitsune named Kotarou fell in love with her (to her despise), a boy cat named Yusuke would tease her (also to her annoyance), she joined the ninja club, and sometimes Neko would act oddly and tell her strange things (“I’m actually human,” for example). But through all of this, Miiko would simply keep going, sometimes because she simply didn’t understand, and other times because in the long run it didn’t affect her a whole lot. One day, Neko left the school after tearfully admitting to being a human, and Miiko’s reaction was simply to stay in bed until she came back; Miiko would later tell Neko that she had a strange dream about Neko saying she was a human, imagine that!
As Neko and Miiko became closer, she admitted to Neko that she was in love with someone, and showed Neko the award. It was not long after this that the class was introduced to the concept of death. Realizing what had happened to Teruo, and the fact that everything she had done up until now was a waste, she turned back into her cat form and stayed that way, acting completely like a cat again. It wasn’t until Neko unwittingly asked a powerful old snake to remove the painful memory that Miiko returned to normal, albeit without the purse that had always hung around her neck. It wasn’t until Neko realized what she had done and requested the memories back that Miiko became completely herself again, breaking down into tears and even allowing the hated Kotarou to comfort her. When Neko finally returned to the dormitories, she admitted once again that she was a human, and Miiko became angry and confused. But once she realized that this didn’t change who Neko was at all, she became calmer, and decided to continue to learn to be a human anyway.
At the end of the series, we are told that she began reading books more often – or at least, looking at the pictures.
Reincarnated History: She was once a stray cat in Locke City, already off and on her own after leaving the litter. She had never been officially taken in by anyone, but there were people who will feed her if they see her, something which she will gladly take advantage of. Aside from the occasional skirmish with other cats, she didn’t have the worst of times, although it certainly could have been better.
Only recently, she found herself taken in by a woman named Elly and has been subsequently spoiled rotten. She’s well loved by her owner, and she loves Elly just as much, to the point of being quite possessive of her. She loves having all of the attention and affection, and has already begun developing a habit of putting herself between Elly and her work in order to garner more.
First Echo: One day while being pampered by her owner, Elly happened to mention what a pretty cat she is. This is enough to echo back her sentience and the power of (slightly more basic) speech.
Preincarnation Personality: Miiko is a cat.
Okay, now that that’s out of the way, let’s continue. She has very little empathy for others; as far as Miiko is concerned, the world may as well revolve around her. As a result, she can be incredibly selfish. She tends to see others as things rather than equals, and can be either very possessive of them or entirely dismissive of them. More than once she grows jealous because Neko decides to help or hold other characters – as she puts it, Neko walks ahead of her, opens doors for her, follows her directions, and even lets Miiko sleep above her. Therefore, Neko should only be nice to her, not anyone else. But at the same time, she won’t just accept affection from anybody; Kotarou makes numerous attempts to hug her, and almost every single time she sends him away nursing a whole new set of injuries. Even when Neko tries to teach her to be a little more sensitive to how others are feeling, she doesn’t help so much because of any epiphany regarding others’ emotions. Rather, she “helps” because Neko is determined to do so, and Neko is her friend, so she needs to come along too. Like many cats, she’s prone to hunting prey, even just for the fun of it; given that she also doesn’t have an understanding of death for the majority of the series, she has absolutely no qualms with asking if she can kill a snake, even going so far as to say she’ll just apologize to it later.
In general, her outlook on life is pretty simple. There are good things and bad things. If it’s a bad thing, she will get mad and maybe even try to hit it. If it’s a good thing, she’ll try to get at it as much as she can, possibly even claiming it as her own. There are certain things that are necessary for survival (attending class also falls under this) and she will complete them duly (although she may complain about it in the meantime). She’s lazy, preferring to have other people do things for her and, honestly speaking, expecting other people to do things for her.
Miiko does not take criticism well at all. If someone she particularly dislikes tells her she is doing something wrong, she will go and prove she can do it right just to spite them – she once spends nearly a whole day in her human form because of this, and only shifts back to her cat form again when Neko assures her it’s fine. Expect her to spend the entire time in a bad mood because of it as well. However… on the other hand, if it’s just gentle chiding, she may not even get that there’s a problem. Getting Miiko to change her ways is a challenge no matter which way you go about it. Still, it’s not like she’s completely unable to do anything for herself; if you are somebody she likes and give her clear directions, she’ll do her best to complete the task, whatever it might be.
Indeed, she can be surprisingly devoted. Everything she does to learn to become human is all because of Teruo, someone she only knew for a short period of her otherwise long life. Her memories of him remain so strong due to the kindness that he showed her, and even though she doesn’t exactly understand the concept of romance, she recognizes that Teruo is someone she likes and wants to be with. Likewise, even if it’s not something she particularly wants to do, someone who she feels close to will probably have an easier time convincing her to take action. Despite voicing her complaints about running in the rain, she comes trailing after Neko who decides to go for it anyway.
Oddly enough, she isn’t nearly as expressive in her human form. While she will still grow visibly excited when it comes to things like food or annoyed if someone continues to pester her, she generally goes around with a blank, nearly unreadable face. She can actually come off as quietly intelligent while like this, when really it’s more likely that she has no interest or opinion on the scenario at hand and is just bored. Still, because her human smiles are not only cute, but somewhat harder to come by, it just makes it all the easier for her to get people to do as she wants in this form. Not that it’s a skill she’s realized in the slightest – that would require being smart enough to understand the concept of manipulation.
Any differences: She doesn’t have the same experience as her past life, so she will not have the same drive to learn human-related things as Miiko. However, given her natural curiosity as a cat, she’ll certainly still be interested in all of these funny things that the humans keep speaking about – after all, she can communicate with people now! Now is clearly the time to pester them with questions about every single thing she doesn’t really get!
Her past self eventually learned what death is, but this version still hasn’t quite got the concept down yet. She knows that she can kill other animals, and will gladly do so if given half the opportunity, but she doesn’t yet realize that this is a definite end for creatures. As far as she’s concerned, she can just apologize the next day and everything will be just fine. In a similar vein, she hasn’t realized the possible repercussions of her actions, and doesn’t know the fear of death. She just hasn’t gotten into a situation yet where she was in such close and threatening danger.
Unlike her past form who would normally be very quiet around humans (after all, she didn’t know how to blend in very well yet), this one will have absolutely no problem with running around trying to pretend to be one. Once she can transform, she might as well put it to use, right? And as long as the others think she’s human too, there won’t be any problems, right? Being surrounded almost entirely by humans rather than animals won’t be such a big deal.
Abilities:
-Transformation: Miiko is able to take a human form. This form is completely solid and real, although if she is sufficiently surprised she may just drop it.
-Smell: being a cat, she has an extremely good sense of smell. She often insists that other animals smell stinky, and will complain if someone hangs out with other animals because the smell will then stick to them.
-Athletics: in human form, she is capable of leaping 9.2 meters (Or a bit over 30 feet).
-Human speech: she has gained the ability to speak like a human, even if her initial vocabulary will be limited until she learns more.
Roleplay Sample - Third Person: Test run here!
Roleplay Sample - Network:
[The feed begins on video, but for some reason… Nothing is there. Is something wrong with the network…?
After a second, a cat hesitantly approaches the “camera”, sniffing at it and lifting a paw in the air, tentatively pawing at it. It’s only when the paw actually hits the “camera” that she bolts away again, this time taking even longer to come back. If your character is still watching at this point, they’ll get to see her staring curiously at the screen for a bit longer. Surely this cat can’t actually be…?]
What is this thing? And why are there so many people inside?
[…All said in the voice of a young teenage girl. Having apparently forgotten her fear entirely, she goes up on her hind legs and presses her forepaws against the “camera”, clearly trying to investigate all the secrets it holds. And also, in the process, accidentally creating her own “absurdly cute cat sniffing at camera” video.]
Any Questions? Her being Elly’s cat has already been arranged with the mun! Also, would it be okay if her test run with Elly could be their game-canon “discovery”?
